Partial Power Outage After Installing New Light Fixture
How to wire a new light. The switch comes first in the new part of the circuit and new 2 wire cable is run to it from the outlet. The box ears should rest tightly against the plaster. You should see plastic caps called wiring caps also called a wire nut with two wires running into each cap. The neutral for the new light is taken from the receptacle and spliced to the new white wire and to a pigtail that connects back to the receptacle. One wire will come from the light the other from the main electrical circuit of your house. Connect the ground wires with a 6 in long pigtail wire leading to the switch.
Bend the second arm of the first support around the box. Trace the mounting box on the ceiling where the light fixture will be mounted. Then insert the other support and bend both arms around the box to tighten the other side. It is helpful to have someone to hold the fixture as you uncap the wires and remove any electrical tape. Twist the wire nut onto the three wires to secure them. Place the bare end of the black wire from the cable in the wall with the bare end of the black wire from the light fixture.
Wiring the new light unscrew the wire nut holding the two black wires together on your existing light. Loop the black wires clockwise around the screws and tighten the screws. Twist the two ends together three or four times with a pair of pliers. Disengage the wires by twisting the wiring cap until it comes free. Cut out the traced hole with an oscillating saw. Take off the cover and note the color of the wire insulation for the wires that.
Loosen and remove the screws from the cover for the light switch that operates the light using a screwdriver. It should be 48 from the floor. Remove the old ceiling light. Determine a location for the light switch. Strip the last one inch of your new black wire and place all three black wires together. Connect the neutral white wires with a wire connector.
Disengage your light from its wires. Use a phillips screwdriver to unscrew the mounting screws and bring down the light fixture. Insert one and bend one leg around the box to draw one side back tight. Before doing any electrical work always shut off power to the house at the main breaker. Strip the ends of the wires at the switch box.
